The migrant crisis passing through the Darien Gap has generated more than a thousand people seeking to reach Central America, without thinking regarding the consequences of passing the so-called ‘green hell’ between the borders of Colombia and Panama.

And it is that most of the migrants who cross the Darién have the United States as their destinationin order to achieve the long-awaited American dream.

More than 310 thousand people have transited during this 2023, breaking the record, compared to previous years. The majority of migrants sleep on the beaches and many of them have even been left homeless, since they do not have the resources to continue the journey, for which I once once more ask the national government and the United States embassy for help, especially for the legislative situation that exists in the North American country, which is increasingly leading migrants to risk their lives to cross the border between Colombia and Panama,” said the governor of Antioquia, Aníbal Gaviria.

Notably 320,098 irregular migrants have arrived in Panama so far in 2023of which 190,889 are Venezuelans42.414 ecuadorians y 35.495 Haitiansreports the Panamanian Ministry of Public Security.

The situation in the Darién Gap is complex and challenging, as it covers an area of approximately 575,000 hectares, between the Tuira and Atrato rivers, in addition to being remote and isolated area, with thick vegetation and a humid and warm climate.

For this reason, the governments of Colombia and Panama are working to improve security and conditions for migrants crossing the region. However, the magnitude of the problem makes it difficult to find a definitive solution.
