International Red Cross says more than 100 deaths in Yemen prison air strikes
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said more than 100 people were killed or wounded in the Saudi-led Arab coalition air strikes on a prison in the Houthi rebel area in the northern city of Saada. Yemen to retaliate the Houthi rebels attacked Abu Dhabi a few days earlier.
Houthi rebels have released video clips showing bodies trapped in rubble in an attack that flattened a prison building.
The Saudi coalition denied it had carried out air strikes, with Turkey’s spokesman Al Malki said. Reports of attacks on rebels’ grounds are unfounded.
Also on Thursday (Aug 20) there was an airstrike on a telecoms office building in the southern Yemeni port city of Hodeida. This resulted in the deaths of four citizens, three of them children, and 17 more injuries, as well as internet outages across the country.
The Saudi-led coalition carried out intensified air strikes following Iran-backed Houthi rebels used drones to attack Abu Dhabi on Monday, killing three people.
On Aug. 21, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on all sides to reduce conflict and comply with international human rights law.
The United Arab Emirates, which is in the Saudi alliance. It insisted the group still adheres to the principle of proportional response, as was the case with Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE’s ambassador to the United Nations. That said the Allied Forces adhered to the norms of international law. and such operations are in response to military action as appropriate.
The conflict is expected to escalate as Houthi spokesman and chief peace negotiator Mohammed Abdulsalam said he would retaliate.
