The Middle East is dividing the EU countries – adressa.no

The foreign ministers of the EU countries met on Monday, among other things, to find a common position regarding the Middle East and to agree on measures that can prevent the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon from escalating into a full-blown war in the region.

But instead some very disturbing views came to the surface, writes the German news agency DPA.

– Nobody listens to the EU

Luxembourg’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Xavier Bettel explained:

– Nobody listens to the EU anymore. The EU is a confetti of positions on the international stage, he stated.

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell is also frustrated, this time that it took the EU countries several days to agree to condemn Israel’s attack on the UN force in Lebanon (Unifil).

Only on Sunday evening, after a meeting lasting several hours, did the countries agree.

– Takes too long

– It takes too long to say something that is completely obvious. It is clear that we must be against Israel’s attack on Unifil, especially because our soldiers are there, says Borrell.

Both Italy, Spain, France and Ireland have sent UN soldiers to Lebanon.

Only on Monday, four days after the first attack against Unifil, did the EU make a statement condemning the attacks.

Goes the longest

Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic are among the countries that go the furthest in their support for Israel. The meeting on Sunday evening is said to have dragged on, among other things, due to opposition from the Czech Republic.

For his part, Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin says that more EU countries must stand “on the side that is right and moral”.
