Some areas in the southern regions of the Kingdom have experienced thunderstorms and torrential rains over the past few days, which caused widespread flooding.
These climate fluctuations that swept across a number of regions raised concerns among the residents of the southern regions, especially since the occurrence of phenomena of this type is rare in the middle of summer.
In its response to the issue, the General Directorate of Meteorology revealed that the southern regions witnessed, last Sunday and Monday, a strong rise of an unstable and highly turbulent tropical air mass as a result of the exceptional situation of the so-called tropical front.
The Meteorological Department explained that this front is formed as a result of the rise of humid tropical air masses to the north and their encounter with others coming from the north, which results in the emergence of unstable and highly turbulent clouds that lead to the formation of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
According to the same source, the rise of this tropical front to the south of the country led to the development of thunderstorms that caused heavy rains in some areas, as the Smara region recorded about 32 mm of rain in just 3 hours, which is an unprecedented record.
It is worth noting that these heavy rains led to torrents and flooding of valleys, which caused material damage, including the closure of the road linking the cities of Laayoune and Smara and the partial collapse of a number of residential homes, without resulting in any loss of life.
