the meteorologist promises +20 degrees soon

However, on the night of Wednesday, April 24, the air temperature will remain below zero. However, by Sunday the amount of precipitation in Latvia will decrease, the sun will shine more often, and the unpleasant wind will subside. “At the beginning of next week, in some places in Latvia the air temperature will reach +20 degrees,” Viksna said.

He also noted that snowy and cold weather in Latvia is not something completely unusual. For example, the latest snow observed in Latvia was in the 1950s, when a 5-centimeter layer of snow fell in Kurzeme on May 29.

“For us, in general, April has historically been the month between winter and summer, when the warm rays of the sun often make the leaves bloom, everything turns green and blooms. Then a cold air mass comes with northerly winds,” Viksna explained.

The meteorologist considers the heat wave that reached Latvia in mid-April to be a more alarming trend. On April 9, a temperature of +25 degrees was recorded at seven observation stations. In Daugavpils on April 10, +27 degrees was recorded.

“The heat wave in early April is a more extreme event in terms of weather. This is one of the manifestations of global climate change. The air temperature is gradually increasing. In the future, heat waves in spring will occur more frequently. They do not cancel the cold and snow. However, they pose a danger to farmers and gardeners. Plants and crops freeze,” the specialist explained.

When asked what summer might be like in Latvia this year, the meteorologist replied that current forecasts show that in terms of temperature, May and the end of May may be warmer than usual. As in previous years, we are likely to see contrasts – heat waves and periods of drought followed by intense rainfall that threatens flooding.
