Unions block KV agreement; FMTI offer was an average increase of 8.2%, consisting of around 6% sustainable wage increase and a net one-off payment of 1,200 euros
Vienna (OTS) – The sixth round of negotiations for the metal technology industry was once more and unilaterally broken off by the unions today following almost twelve hours of talks, and strikes are now on their agenda. The metal engineering industry views this approach as irresponsible and disproportionate. The FMTI’s last offer was an average of 8.2% more wages and salaries, consisting of sustainable, socially staggered wage and salary increases of an average of 6%.
as well as a tax-exempt one-off payment of 1,200 euros net. For the lowest employment group, the wage increase would even be up to 12%.
Christian Knill, chairman of the Metal Technology Industry Association: “The union’s blockade policy is incomprehensible and unacceptable; they continue to insist on their demands and don’t move a millimeter. In the last few weeks we have presented eight different offers that take into account the very difficult economic situation. Our current offer, which would have brought a total of over 8% more wages for the employees, was ultimately wiped off the table. Nobody understands this behavior anymore. We will counter the strike that follows with all means at our disposal. Any form of impermissible obstruction or blockage will be reported. It is also clear that the strikers will not receive any wages during the work stoppage; the unions are now responsible for that. In any case, this means a loss of wages for the strikers. At the end of the day, this uncompromising behavior risks losing jobs in our industry. It is a great pity for our employees that the unions are making politics on their backs instead of standing up together for the competitiveness of our industry and thus prosperity and security. Now go on strike, no one understands that anymore.”
*(2.7% plus 130 euros monthly fixed amount as a sustainable wage or salary increase)
About the metal engineering industry
The metal engineering industry is Austria’s strongest sector. Over 1,200 companies from the mechanical engineering, plant engineering, steel construction, metal goods and foundry sectors form the backbone of the local industry. The export-oriented industry is structured as a medium-sized company, consists of more than 85% family businesses and is responsible for a quarter of all Austrian exports. Numerous companies are world market leaders and “hidden champions”.
The metal technology industry directly employs more than 137,000 people and thus indirectly secures around 300,000 jobs in Austria. In 2022 it generated a production value of around 49.5 billion euros. The Metal Technology Industry Association, a merger of the former mechanical and metal goods industry and foundry industry associations, is one of the largest business and employer associations in Austria and is an independent organization within the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.
