The first lighting recycling plant in the country, located since October 2020 in Mendoza, converted 20 thousand lamps that were mercury or sodium to LED. The establishment is located in the Junín Punto Limpio municipal center. The project was recognized with first prize in the Public Policies category at the Green Awards, something like the Oscars of sustainability.

Daniel Ascurra, head of the recycling plant, told ONE Diary in this note that it is prepared to carry out a reconversion process of three thousand luminaires per month. The process consists of several steps:

Income: The lamps enter the warehouse where they are disassembled and identified.

Repair: general and parts maintenance is carried out.

Pulido: The casing is polished and powder coated. Then it goes into the oven for 15 minutes at 200 degrees.

Adjustment and assembly: The parts and obstacles that will speed up the passage of the elements in the remaining sectors are placed and all the LED technology is assembled.

Control final: the luminaire is tested and all aspects of the final element are reviewed to avoid failures in its operation.

Dispatch: It is packed for later transport to the place where it will be placed.

The energy benefit is very considerable, according to the head of the plant in this note to The Andes. “Conventional lights use between 250W to 400W of power per hour, and we would replace it with 129W per hour, a 63% energy saving,” said Ascurra.

The “Junín Punto Limpio” program covers the collection of plastic waste and its reuse through everyday products made at the Plastic Waste treatment plant of the Municipality of Junín. It has recycled around 90 million containers since its inauguration in 2012. In 2022, the plant was the winner in the “Public Policies” category of the Green Awards due to its positive impact on the sustainability and reconversion of lighting.
