By the council’s decision, memorial plaques to Soviet-era artists – cultural figure Juozas Banaičius, actor Vasilijas Kačialovs and poet Teofilis Tilvyčius – will be removed.
As Kamilė Šeraitė-Gogelienė, chairwoman of the municipality’s Historical Memory Commission, told BNS, it was proposed to remove the boards “due to their collaboration with the Soviet regime and their merits to that regime.”
The eldest of these three is V. Kacialovas (real name Vasilijus Šverubovičius) – born in Vilnius in 1875, later studied in St. Petersburg, acted in the Moscow Art Theater (MCHAT), where he became one of the most famous actors. The actor often vacationed in Vilnius, played on Lithuanian stages during his theater tours.
This actor was awarded the honorary title of People’s Artist of the USSR in 1936, in 1943 – Stalin’s prize.
V. Kacialovas died in 1948. September 30, buried in Moscow.
In Vilnius, a commemorative plaque to him is hung on Dižiaja Street, on the house where he was born and lived as a child.

However, this is not the only memorial to this actor in Vilnius. A Russian-language high school is named after him.
