The media are also guilty (By Chérif Diop)

We media people are morally guilty. Once the emotion has passed, rationality compels us to take responsibility. Continuing to overwhelm Ndella Madior Diouf, now placed under arrest, is like shooting at an ambulance. She already has a lot to do with all the charges once morest her: human trafficking, illegal exercise of the function of doctor, deprivation of food or care leading to death without intention to cause it, endangerment of the life of others, failure to assist a person in danger and improperly obtaining certificates for burial purposes.

The case is cruel because it concerns children, a vulnerable group. But shooting this lady with red bullets is a despicable shortcut that ignores the undeniable responsibility of the State and the media, which also have their own. We insidiously participated in the legitimization of his evil business. Ndella Madior Diouf was a regular on our television, radio and website sets. We delighted in his abject outings, sometimes very limited on moral subjects.

This indelicacy throughout the broadcasts should have alerted us to her sudden reconversion into “mother of orphans”. On the contrary, we participated in his greedy project and the false of “Keur Yeurmandé”. Children have died from it.

We have not taken the minimum of reflective distance on Ndella Madior Diouf’s sudden interest in children. We have naively believed in the natural goodness of man and in the natural propensity of women to be maternal, without realizing that not everyone has good intentions.

We made a mistake in good faith, perhaps, but this event should serve as a lesson to us. Questioning more regarding the profile of the people to whom we frequently hand our microphones on subjects of major issues is a fundamental question. Are they more legitimate? More expert? What added value does it bring to the debate? etc. Because, systematically giving a person a voice means accrediting their thoughts and giving credence to their action.

However, it must be admitted that the exercise is difficult. Press organs no longer have a virtual monopoly on public expression because the internet and social media have turned everything upside down, but be careful: the current confusion between their different roles fuels indistinction. However, the heart of our action is to provide precision, clarity and to dissociate truth from propaganda.

So that trust in journalists is restored, we have the obligation to rebuild our rigor and our credibility so as to no longer be deceived by Ndella Madior Diouf, nor by anyone else, at the time of the national press meetings.
