The MCC’s Proposal: Reducing ODI Series after 2027 World Cup to Elevate Test and T20 Cricket

London: England’s Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), who are the creators of the cricket rules, have written an obituary for ODI cricket, which has faded under the influence of T20 cricket. The MCC’s suggestion is to cut the bilateral ODI series following the 2027 World Cup so as to give importance to Test cricket and T20 cricket and only one year before the World Cup is enough.

The 13-member expert committee of the MCC has suggested that ODI cricket has lost its importance without tournaments like the World Cup, and therefore, bilateral ODI series should be gradually reduced following 2027. The proposal was put forward by a committee consisting of Mike Gatting, Sourav Ganguly, Rameez Raja and Kumar Sangakkara.

The MCC’s argument is that with the reduction of bilateral series, the standard of Test cricket can be raised and made more competitive. MCC’s position is that following the 2027 World Cup, the bilateral series should be stopped and restarted only one year before the 2031 World Cup.

The proposal also states that with the reduction of ODI series, Test cricket will find more time in the ICC competition calendar. The 2027 ODI World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The 2031 ODI World Cup has been allotted to India and Bangladesh by the ICC.

It remains to be seen whether the MCC proposal will be implemented when the ICC and cricket boards prepare the future tour programs following 2027. The MCC is also proposing to reduce the penalty imposed on account of low over rate in Test cricket.
