The Mazda MX-5 Miata achieves an unusual world record

Production of the Mazda MX-5 Miata officially surpassed one million units after only 27 years on sale. Sales remain strong for the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car, as it approaches 1.2 million sales worldwide.

As of the end of August 2023, Mazda had sold 1,192,886 units of the MX-5 Miata globally since its introduction at the Detroit Auto Show in 1989.

Despite September sales, Mazda’s press materials at the Japan Mobility Show revealed that the 1.2 millionth unit has already been produced, officially marking another huge milestone in the history of the world’s favorite sports car.

For reference, Porsche had sold about the same number of 911s (as of May 2023), a sports car that’s been around for almost twice as long as the Miata and is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

The updated figures point to strong demand for the model, which is on track to rack up its next 200,000 sales in a much shorter time than it took to sell the last 200,000 units.

It took Mazda about six and a half years to sell its last 200,000 sports cars. Before this, it took Mazda almost nine years (June 2007 – April 2016) to go from 800,000 to 1 million.

The previous 200,000 took five and a half years (January 2002 – June 2007), so while the most recent period hasn’t been the fastest in Mazda’s history, it’s proof that demand is still high for the fourth-generation sports car, even though 2024 marks its ninth model year on sale.

No signs of slowing down

Mazda has just announced a new series of updates to constitute the facelift of the ND3, which for the 2024 model year includes redesigned headlights and taillights, a new DSC Track driving mode and a special asymmetric differential to help the sports car.

Mazda engineers have previously compared the development of the MX-5 to that of the Porsche 911, suggesting that the platform can continually evolve to remain relevant in changing markets.

Mazda has no intention of letting the MX-5 die, and while electrification may be inevitable, the company won’t let that come at the expense of the core attributes that make the Miata a Miata, like light weight and dynamic dynamics. fun driving.

Even though sports cars are a niche segment in a declining small car market, demand is seemingly on the rise, and the MX-5 Miata appears to be bucking industry trends in more ways than one, proving that there are demand for sports cars and rejecting the notion that modern cars need to be bigger and heavier than ever.
