The mayors stop dead in their tracks – and leave behind a problem that goes away on its own

Regardless of how the citizens of North Jutland tick their boxes for next year’s municipal elections, it is therefore set in stone that the gallery of mayoral candidates will look markedly different after the elections than four years earlier.

Because the mayor is the only full-time politician in all the municipalities in North Jutland apart from Aalborg, this political post is completely central: In addition to being the political head of the municipality, the mayor is also the commander-in-chief of the municipal employees – and when you look at the number of employees in the North Jutland municipalities, you can really get an idea of how heavy a mayor’s post actually is.

In other words, it is far from unimportant who wears the mayor’s chain.

Alone with Birgit Hansen (S) and Mogens Gade (V), a handful of decades of political experience are leaving the mayoral posts in North Jutland. And in addition, they are also two of the most popular figures among the voters: Both mayors sit at the end of the table in the city council, where their party alone can muster the majority, first and foremost brought forward by just the two vote-eaters and their great personalities and political flair.

Both Birgit Hansen and Mogens Gade’s huge voter support shows how important a distinctive and driven politician is in local politics. Birgit Hansen has been called the Queen of Frederikshavn, among other things, and her almost untouchable position has meant that she has been able to use her power in a completely different way than a “real” queen.

But with experience also comes habits and – perfection of power, which in the extreme can lead to abuse of power and a lack of democracy. To avoid it, replacement is the simplest medicine.

Therefore, it is basically a good thing that the four mayors themselves have taken the consequences and let other forces come to the fore. Even if their experience will probably be missed sometimes.

Fortunately, lack of experience is something that goes away on its own over time.

This is a leader. It was written by a member of our board of directors and expresses Nordjutske’s position.
