QUITO (AP) — New York Mayor Eric Adams said on Friday during his visit to Quito that the problem of human mobility has been treated like a “little cold, when in reality it is a very aggressive virus” for the which we must look for effective treatments.
In a joint press conference with the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Gustavo Manrique, Adams stated that it is necessary to properly diagnose the phenomenon.
“You cannot use old methods for new problems,” he asserted, while mentioning that the number of migrants and people seeking asylum around the world “has tripled.”
The New York mayor, who early went to a shelter center and a foundation to welcome migrants in Ecuador, mentioned that in the Americas “we have witnessed a crisis that is worsening over time and has not stabilized,” for you have to change your mentality to handle the crisis.
Adams evoked the coronavirus pandemic and said that in that crisis “we all cooperated together to manage a global threat and the same has to happen now because it is a global threat.” She called on non-profit organizations and governments to make an effective mitigation plan, in which there must also be an active role from the private and business sectors.
We cannot allow misinformation to continue putting our people in danger. “There are people who act in bad faith,” she stressed. “This is a childhood crisis, make no mistake, and children are the most important thing in the future. “I am committed to saving the future by saving children.”
Previously, the mayor, meeting with representatives of international organizations and authorities of the Andean country, mentioned that “we like to think of New York as the Ecuador of the United States… We are going to pursue real solutions; It is imperative to consider one thing that, above all, we are talking regarding human beings.”
In his turn, the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Gustavo Manrique, stated that “irregular migration is combated through the opportunities that are generated in the territory,” which is why he requested that the debate be expanded with the US government on actions that “promote local development”.
An example would be “circular migration” that makes possible a legal temporary stay, departure and a subsequent return. In addition, there was talk of family reunification.
For Manrique, the visit was highly relevant to confront “a global problem” and he cited figures from the United Nations Refugee Agency regarding at least 115 million displaced people on the planet due to economic or violence issues, among others.
The mayor of New York recently insisted on asking a court to temporarily suspend the right to shelter granted by a 1981 law, which obliges the local authority to provide emergency accommodation to anyone who requests it.
Ecuador is the second destination on Adams’ agenda, which began on Thursday in Mexico and, following passing through Quito, will continue in Colombia and end in Panama. His return to New York is scheduled for Sunday.
