the Mayenne SPA calls for donations of croquettes

The Mayenne SPA is appealing for generosity: the association needs kibble for dogs. Stocks have been declining for several months, faced with the arrival of many animals at the Laval shelter. A collection was therefore organized at the Leclerc in Laval on February 24 and 25, 2023.

A rather atypical collection was organized on Friday February 24 and Saturday February 25 at the Leclerc in Laval. Supermarket customers were asked to donate dog food. The Mayenne SPA has almost no more stocks and had to urgently launch a collection during these two days. The number of abandoned dogs is on the rise at the Laval shelter and to feed all these animals, the association therefore needs help.

About 15 dogs abandoned every month

At the entrance to the supermarket are several shopping carts filled with packets of croquettes. Customers who make donations are often already aware of the animal cause. Claudine, a resident of Laval, for example, adopted a dog at the SPA de la Mayenne. “Life is getting expensive, the kibbles will be multiplied by three or four. It will be absurd. There will also be a lot of abandonments following inflation so I participate and I will give a lot for the animalss”, says this 64-year-old Lavallois.

Since the end of last year, the Mayenne SPA has been welcoming an average of fifteen abandoned dogs per month. The kibble reserves have therefore decreased and the stocks must be replenished quickly. Each month, the association needs 1,200 kilos of kibble to feed all the dogs and cats at the shelter, located in Laval. In recent months, large dogs have arrived at the SPA and they require more kibble on a daily basis. “We prefer dogs today because we have recovered a lot of big dogs“, explains a volunteer from the SPA to a client who enters the Leclerc.

This collection also makes it possible to make customers aware of the regular needs of the SPA. Alain, for example, donates kibble for dogs, but he does not intend to stop there. “So we had a cat that left but left kibble. We’re going to take them to the SPA rather than leaving them to rot at home. If it can help them, yes, that’s a lot of animals anyway“, he underlines.

In total, the Mayenne SPA currently welcomes 110 dogs and 40 cats. To donate kibble for dogs or cats, it is possible to drop them off directly at the SPA de la Mayenne in Laval every followingnoon, Monday to Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.
