The marketing of “detox”

A healthy lifestyle is thus the first guarantee of good detoxification, and undertaking once a year a “detox cure” thinking that you can withstand all types of excess the rest of the time is unfortunately largely ineffective, if not deleterious. It is above all in this that the communication of the detox is misleading. It lets the consumer believe that its “miracle” solution preserves it: it meets the need for the least effort, so who wouldn’t want to try? Especially since at worst, “it can’t hurt”… I’ll let you be the judge.

In addition to the lack of traceability of the draining substances of many products (method of cultivation, harvesting, processing, etc.), their use can induce inflammatory risks if the lifestyle is not a priority. The “flagship compound” has good publicity, sometimes without respect for the totum [la globalité d’une plante, en phytothérapie, NDLR] nor in a judicious dosage. And even so… Admittedly, not all products are created equal, and we must recognize the efforts of certain laboratories, but the heart of detoxification is in the diet, and the rest is always observed individually. The positive aspect of certain products labeled “detox” is that they arouse curiosity and remind us that resources for human beings are found in the natural world.

Detox diets, yes, but which ones?

The detox diets offered are often exclusive. Why not, if the foods being avoided are junk foods, although this shouldn’t just be part of a ‘diet’. THE animal feed are often considered “clogging” for the body, while the vast majority of the nutrients necessary (or their precursors) for detoxifying enzymes and the integrity of the intestinal mucosa are found in satisfactory quantities and easily usable in these foods. On the other hand, farming methods are decisive in terms of the presence of nutrients and toxins. Similarly, the zeal of this diet of “healthy eating” causes excess fibers that become irritating, depending on sensitivities, and can ultimately unbalance the intestinal ecosystem.

Avoid “junk food”

Refining, ultra-processed foods, trans fats, excess sugars and starches, food additives of all kinds, etc. particularly solicit the detoxifying functions, while depriving them of their needs. Junk food disrupts the balance of the microbiota and reinforces oxidative stress, inflammation, reabsorption of toxins, endotoxemia, methylation defects, etc.

Detox is above all balance and regularity

Despite the suspicions around the real capacities of our organizations, the essential is in balanced and constant contributions. No strategy can effectively and sustainably promise to improve the body’s detoxification without first providing all the nutritional elements to restore the physiology. Food, which is the best friend of “detox”, must provide what is necessary, encourage a good intestinal balance (container AND content), without being excessive. There is a whole cacophony of bells ringing around “health foods”, let’s just point to what has allowed our bodies to build such a detoxification system over the millennia: ancestral food. It has functional interests (especially at the level of the intestinal ecosystem, through the secretory balance in the stomach which greatly determines the quality of the rest of the digestion), provides macro and micronutrients (optimized bioavailability) at physiological dosages ( that respect the capacities of the body). It is a “non-specific” approach, unlike micronutritionist approacheswhich, by their level of specificity, must be reserved for very specific cases, and use qualitative supplements (natural molecules in particular).

Environmental Health Recommendations

Evolutionary medicine proposes, to reduce evolutionary discrepancies or inadequacies, to bring us closer to the ways of life which, over a few millennia, have shaped our homeostatic systems:

  • adopt an ancestral diet;
  • reduce exposure to chemicals;
  • find a wake/sleep rhythm close to the day/night alternation;
  • have low-intensity physical activity every day, a wide variety of movements;
  • spend a significant amount of time outdoors, in nature, and limit time in confined environments, indoors;
  • intelligent exposure to the sun;
  • avoid sanitizing your environment;
  • favor an environment where food is not very visible (just like and screens or artificial lights), etc.
