The sea tunnel project linking Morocco to Spain via the Strait of Gibraltar is approaching completion, after the stagnation that this project has witnessed over the past years.
According to Spanish reports, the improvement of diplomatic relations between the two countries has revived this project again, as a contract was recently signed to acquire marine seismic measuring devices, which is a crucial step to complete geological feasibility studies.
Under this step, modern measuring devices rented by the company supervising the project for a period of six months for 486 thousand euros will be used to conduct a new seismic and geological study in the Strait area.
This research, according to the same source, aims to update data related to seismic activity in the region, as previous studies have shown that the strait experiences earthquakes with a magnitude exceeding 4 degrees, and they occur at depths of more than 40 kilometers.
The new studies will allow, according to the same source, to evaluate the extent to which these conditions affect the possibility of completing the tunnel, and to propose innovative solutions to ensure its safety, especially since the geological nature of the strait poses a major challenge to the project, as the European and African tectonic plates intersect in the region, which increases the possibility of seismic activity and makes it difficult Construction operations.
