Discussions had emerged concerning a possible postponement of the verdict. These discussions followed requests from some lawyers for additional investigations following the discovery of new evidence from infiltrated phones revealing encrypted messages. Among these revelations, some implicate Achraf B. in the assassination of Martin Kok, a blogger specializing in crime, in 2016.

These lawyers had also requested the hearing of a witness in Morocco and the correction of translations marred by spelling errors. However, the court rejected these requests, finding that additional investigations were not required and that the translation errors did not alter the meaning of the documents.

Furthermore, new information from the communications of the main witness, Nabil B., referring to possible reprisals following a shooting, did not cause any delay either. Nabil B. was directly questioned on these points in court. The Public Prosecutor’s Office had clarified that the addition of these documents had no impact on the outcome of the trial, but simply aimed to ensure the completeness of the file.

The Marengo trial, which began in 2018, has experienced delays due to its complexity. Although the verdict was initially expected in October last year, it was postponed until February. As part of this trial, a life prison sentence was requested for six of the accused, including Ridouan Taghi, presented as the leader of a criminal organization and the instigator of several murders.
