A father from New South Wales, Australia thought it was a non-venomous diamondback python, but he was sorely mistaken as the snake soon bit him.
He took the snake home anyway, thinking the bite was harmless.
However, the man realized that all was not well when he began to vomit violently and his hand was severely swollen, so he rushed to the hospital.
A nurse at Bowral Hospital contacted snake expert Ray McGibbon and sent him a picture of the animal.
He immediately identified it as a broad-faced snake that injects neurotoxins into the bloodstream that can cause disability and, in some cases, death.
“The traveler was very lucky to survive the sting and poisoning [nesuteikus] first aid, he said. “It could have ended much worse than it did.” All types of rattlesnake bites are potentially fatal.”
McGibbon said the man was kept in hospital for six hours before being sent home to recover.
The expert, who runs the South Highlands Snake Catching Service, said he picked up the reptile and returned it to its habitat a few days later.
He said the traveler was “happy to share this story for educational purposes and hopes that people will take this into account and not make the same mistakes he did”.
“So please, if you see a snake or any other reptile in the wild, please admire it in its natural habitat. Take a picture or video and please DO NOT try to catch her or take her home,” he said on his Facebook page.
