The man charged with the Apotek murder in Arendal does not want a lawyer in court

The man is obliged to have a defense attorney according to section 96 of the Criminal Procedure Act, which applies in all criminal cases except for mild violations of, for example, the Road Traffic Act.

– He doesn’t want a defender, and in that sense he doesn’t want to have any contact with me either. The only problem is that I have been appointed as his defender, and I will be until the court releases me from that office, says Ole Joakim Devold to Agderposten.

The court can only exempt him from the position if the man wants someone else to defend him. He has already made frequent changes, and Devold is the fourth defender in this case. The defendant did not want to explain himself either to the police or in court. Nor has he spoken to his lawyer.

The man has been under compulsory psychiatric observation at Dikemark Hospital for eight weeks. During the court hearing on Monday, the prosecution wanted four new weeks there, while his defender submitted a claim that the man should no longer be under compulsory observation.

– The experts have given notice that they need four more weeks to be able to respond to the mandate they have been given to the district court, says police attorney Vanja Bruvoll.

If the police’s wish is granted, the trial can start in January, according to Bruvoll.
