The documentary film “Dahomey” by French-Senegalese actress and director Mati Diop won the Golden Bear, the main prize of the 74th Berlin Film Festival. The award ceremony for the festival laureates took place on the evening of February 24 at the Berlinale Palace.
Diop’s film tells the story of the return of the treasures of the African kingdom of Dahomey from Paris to their homeland in present-day Benin.
The Grand Prix of the Berlinale jury was awarded to the film “Needs of a Traveler” by South Korean director Hong Sang-soo. The jury prize went to the film “Empire” by Bruno Dumont.
The Silver Bear for Best Director was awarded to Dominican Nelson Carlo de Los Santos Arias (“Pepe”).
The prize for best role was won by American actor Sebastian Stan (“The Other Man”), and British actress Emily Watson (“Such Little Things”) was recognized as best supporting actress.
The award for best screenplay went to German director Matthias Glasner (“Death”).
Austrian cinematographer Martin Gschlacht (The Devil’s Bath) was awarded the Silver Bear for outstanding achievements in the field of cinematography.
The 2024 Honorary Golden Bear was awarded to Martin Scorsese.
