At the Riksdag, there should have also been a number of climate scientists to show their support for the blockade, according to a press release from the activists.
There were regarding twenty people who blocked the entrances, according to police spokesperson Daniel Wikdahl. The demonstration has not received permission from the police and will lead to a report of a violation of the Public Order Act.
The general assembly was dissolved at lunchtime without the need for police intervention.
Quiet place
Those who wanted to enter the Riksdag were directed to other entrances, according to SVT Nyheter’s reporter Ulf Hambraeus, who was at the scene.
– There are a number of police and security guards who walk around and communicate with the activists. It is very peaceful. Not heated by any means really, he said.
Daniel Wikdahl stated that the police let the activists remain at the entrances to the Riksdag.
– It will be a matter of judgment as to how long one can use their constitutionally protected rights, he said.
Thunberg: “Planetary emergency”
In the press release from the activists, it is stated that the blockade was made to “make visible that people are dying and injured today as a result of climate disasters, war and unequal distribution of resources”.
Greta Thunberg believes that the blockade was made for the “planetary emergency”. She believes that all countries have a responsibility for the climate and thus also Swedish elected politicians.
– We see it as a democratic obligation as citizens of a democracy to act when elected officials act in a way that directly causes harm and puts people at risk for their safety and lives, she said.
