The main differences between pneumonia and ARVI are named – how to recognize a dangerous disease in yourself

What does a runny nose mean, and what does increased snoring mean?

Specialists from the Federal Scientific and Clinical Center of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia named the main differences between pneumonia and ARVI. Thus, the main symptoms of pneumonia are increased sputum production, shortness of breath, chest pain and high fever.

– Pneumonia usually begins with a cough. In the initial stage of the disease, it is most often dry, but as the disease progresses, sputum production begins – this is an important indicator of pneumonia. With ordinary respiratory viral infections, as a rule, there is no sputum or its amount is minimal. Another important symptom of pneumonia is decreased breathing and shortness of breath. The patient may also experience heart palpitations. Shortness of breath is a characteristic symptom that distinguishes pneumonia from ARVI. In addition, chest pain occurs and the temperature rises, said representatives of the press service of the Federal Scientific and Clinical Center FMBA in an interview with the radio station “Moscow speaks”.

Experts noted that the appearance or intensification of snoring may also indicate problems with the lungs. Snoring occurs due to narrowness of the airways, which can be caused by pneumonia, the FMBA emphasized.

Experts called the most alarming symptom a condition when the patient feels a temporary improvement with normalization of body temperature following an acute respiratory viral infection, but then a second wave of fever occurs.

– A runny nose, on the contrary, indicates that the patient most likely has an acute respiratory viral infection. Thus, if a patient has the following symptoms: cough with sputum, feeling of shortness of breath and difficulty breathing, chest pain, increased snoring or other unusual complaints, it is recommended to consult a doctor for further examination and diagnosis, concluded FMBA specialists.
