“The MAIF is a player in sport”

On the occasion of the first gathering of the “Planet Sport Captains of the MAIF”, at the Golf National of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines this Sunday, Philippe Tauvel, responsible for brand commitment and societal actions at the MAIF, demonstrates the MAIF’s environmental commitment to sport.

Can you explain what the MAIF “Sport Planet” movement is?

Movement Sport Planet started from the principle that the MAIF is a player in sport, we do not necessarily know that. As an insurer, we insure around twenty federations, 33,000 sports clubs, ultimately, that’s around five thousand practitioners. The MAIF is also a partner of sport since we are a partner of eight federations. And, when we are a player in sport, when we are a company with a mission and when we ensure that our activities have a positive impact, we therefore try to look in the field of sport in what way we can help practitioners to adopt increasingly eco-responsible practices.

The MAIF has joined forces with 7 great champions (Charlotte Bonnet, Marine Boyer, Elodie Clouvel, Sandrine Gruda, Mélina Robert-Michon, Claire Supiot, Chloé Trespeuch), why did you select these sportswomen in particular?

Indeed, we decided to work with athletes who have a lot of Olympic or Paralympic news this year, athletes who also have a good track record and therefore who also have the capacity to mobilize the public’s attention. In addition, they all had an appetite for ecology. Obviously, some were particularly more invested in it, others less, but they at least had the desire to do it. We position ourselves precisely to help support them in a more eco-responsible approach to a better understanding of the subjects. That’s why this morning there was the responsible sport fresco which is an adaptation of the climate fresco in the middle of sport, fun and educational quizzes to also get into the subject. Thus, through their growing power on the subject, they realize that everyone can project themselves since they just need to be interested in the subject, then begin to take action gradually. So that in the end, everyone can practice sport in the most eco-responsible way possible.

The MAIF is therefore a player in sport, in addition to this first gathering of “Sport Planet Captains”, how does the “Sport Planet” movement act in the world of sport?

The “Sport Planète” movement covers different categories of events and adapts differently depending on the context with the Federations. For example, with the French athletics or triathlon federation, we are committed to trying to eradicate the distribution of plastic bottles during races. In fact, we sometimes distribute hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles at a single event. This is why we support a partner who has created water ramps, which make it possible to distribute water to competitors in less than a second at the supply points, which practically no longer justifies distributing bottles of water. plastic water. To give another example, with the French Basketball Federation, we realized that children could indeed come with water bottles but that it was very complicated to be able to fill them in the gymnasiums where there were no had no water fountains. Even if it is now an obligation that places open to the public can allow the distribution of water. Consequently, water fountains are installed in gymnasiums. Finally, we really have different actions depending on the actors we work with, whether they are federations or event organizers.

“The main thing is really this greening of the planet”

This event at the Golf National de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines is the start of the planting of 2024 trees, what does this consist of?

So, we are really positioning ourselves on this planting of 2024 trees, on supporting pre-existing projects. Of course, there are different organizations, so here it is the Golf National, however it could be other sports clubs which actually have planting needs, which have clearly identified the types of tree species which they needed. We just come to help them find a source of financing. Obviously, as this is the starting point, today with “Les Capitaines Sport Planète”, we are going to plant at least 2024 trees in total over the year in the sporting sector, through more or less important projects, more or less less consequential. Since the main thing is really this greening of the planet. We really position ourselves as supporting goodwill.

For the moment “Sport Planète” is very focused on the environment. In the near or less near future, will you diversify into other themes?

We realized that focusing on a theme to be audible and effective, rather than being scattered all over the place, it was more logical to focus on the theme of the ecology of sport. However, it is not exclusive to other problems. Indeed, a social subject like the place of women’s sport in sport is an important subject. This is why we decided to create a team of 100% female athletes with only female athletes who are references in their discipline. We can do ecology, but also focus on societal subjects such as the place of women’s sport in sport.

To bounce back on women’s sport. Do athletes who are part of the “Sport Planet” movement benefit from the Performance Pact?

The way we contracted with them is effectively a performance pact. Therefore, we respect the way things are calibrated, since if we went to them it is because they are high-level athletes. Thus, we completely respect their times. We mobilize them because we have to get into the subject, but then we will completely let them devote themselves to their activities and we will invite them to meet in September for a “Rope and Sport Planète” with an ascent on the Mont Blanc which will be another way of connecting with nature and the environmental issues that we are concretely observing with the melting of glaciers.
