In this way, the phenomenon of building arbitrariness, profiteering, money laundering, every form of delinquency, extortion and finally serious crime developed and grew. This is how Mykonos came into the spotlight, it is discredited and dragged away” notes the mayor.
At the same time, he asks for adequate staffing of the police, the port and the building service, which he proposes to be controlled directly by the Ministry of the Environment. “Tackling this particularly burdensome and complex situation requires will and determination, first and foremost from the central authority and certainly from us as a municipal authority, but also from the rest of the local bodies. We therefore require everyone to respect the island and its inhabitants. They must know that what is happening in Mykonos has a reflection on the tourist image of Greece. The reputation of Mykonos must be restored and for this we all have a responsibility, depending on our institutional power, state and self-government”.
Despite the heavy climate, however, the island continues to be a pole of attraction. “It is obvious that events such as the murder of the unfortunate Panagiotis Stathis, even if it did not happen in Mykonos, negatively affect the image of the destination and create a negative psychology not only among potential visitors but also among residents and workers on the island. Despite all this, Mykonos lives and moves at tourist rates, with constant flows of visitors and good occupancy of hospitality and catering businesses. It might not be otherwise, given that it has a powerful tourism brand, is popular and attractive to the ends of the earth. This glorious Mykonos, as millions of visitors have come to know it, we want to rid it of the shadows and wrinkles that have been created in recent years,” Mr. Veronis points out.
THE SEVERE CRIMINAL PAST OF 44 YEARS
