The Netherlands is mourning former footballer Johan Neeskens, who died suddenly at the age of 73. “Johan was one of our greatest. We will miss him enormously,” the Dutch Football Association said on social media.
Johan Neeskens was one of the pillars of the golden generation at Oranje in the 1970s. At the 1974 World Cup, the midfielder scored 5 times, including his iconic and hard penalty in the (lost) World Cup final against West Germany.
That same summer, Neeskens left Ajax after 4 very successful seasons. With three final victories in the Eurocup I – the current Champions League – under his belt, the midfielder moved to FC Barcelona, where he was reunited with Johan Cruijff and was nicknamed Johan Segundo – Johan II.
In Barcelona, Neeskens won the European Cup II and the Spanish Cup. He ended his career in Groningen in his own country after a stint with New York Cosmos.
After his active career, Neeskens was active as an (assistant) coach for many years, including with the Netherlands, Australia and “his” Barcelona.
Neeskens became unwell on Sunday during an event in Algeria, where he was present on behalf of the Dutch Football Association. He was 73 years old.
“It is with great sadness that the KNVB has learned of the unexpected death of Johan Neeskens. Johan was one of our greatest. We will miss him enormously,” the Dutch Football Association announced the sad news.
