One of Apple’s main contractors for MacBook assembly would gradually shift from a shelf phase to new mass production. Given the timing, the news is likely regarding the upcoming 15-inch MacBook Air, expected this summer.
You may not be familiar with Quanta Computer, but the activity of this Apple subcontractor, which specializes in the assembly of portable computers, is being watched very closely by analysts for a simple and good reason: it should logically take care of the production of the next 15-inch MacBook Air. So when Erik Woodring, an analyst for US investment bank Morgan Stanley reports that Quanta is ramping up production, everyone listens intently.
In a note shared on May 19, the interested party indicates that, compared to the first quarter of 2023, the Taiwanese group has forecast high growth for assembled laptops during the second quarter. This announcement is far from trivial: this renewed activity suggests that the MacBook Air 15 would gradually enter the mass production phase.
The MacBook Air 15? It would be very soon…
In other words, the track of a presentation of the device during the WWDC, next June 5, is more and more tangible. In this case, the device might be marketed quickly following its announcement… as had been the MacBook Air M2 last year.
A prediction all the more viable since Mark Gurman had recently confirmed that a 15-inch MacBook Air was in the pipeline for WWDC 2023.
« As part of watchOS 10, Apple plans to bring back widgets and make them a central part of the interface. This new strategy will debut at WWDC in June, alongside the unveiling of iOS 17, macOS 14, the 15-inch MacBook Air and, of course, the highly anticipated mixed reality headset.“, in particular indicated the Bloomberg journalist, often very aware of what is going on at Apple.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst for TF International, also well informed, had for his part predicted that the device would be satisfied, like its little brother, with an Apple M2 chip. It should also take over the same design, more or less, but with a simply larger screen.
As a reminder, the current MacBook Air M2 is limited to a diagonal of 13.6 inches and includes a 1080p webcam, a MagSafe power connector, two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports and a fingerprint reader; all for a starting price set in France at 1499 euros. It is not known at this stage what the launch price of the MacBook Air 15 would be and whether the device would take advantage of its large size to carry a more generous assortment of connectors. Answer in a little less than a month (logically).
