The M4 Mac Mini could do away with USB-A ports entirely, according to a new report

Over the past few months, we’ve been hearing about a major redesign of the Mac Mini, with hopes that the M4 version of the Mac Mini will be much smaller than its current iteration when it arrives.

In addition to hearing about the possibility of the company eventually making 16GB of RAM the base for its new Mac models, it sounds like there will also be a change in I/O.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports in his Power On newsletter that the Mac Mini will finally ditch USB-A ports, and it’s possible the Mac Pro and Mac Studio will share the same fate next year.

Apple’s Mac Mini to see a port reshuffle

According to Gurman, the M4 Pro version will offer five USB-C ports, with three on the back and two on the front.

It will also include the Ethernet and HDMI connectors found on current models, as well as a headphone jack.

The current Mac Mini range features either two or four USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports on the rear, but also retains a pair of USB-A ports. The same is true of the Mac Studio, but the more expensive desktop also has two additional USB-C or Thunderbolt 4 ports, depending on which model you choose.

Apple has upset customers in the past with its willingness to adopt USB-C at the expense of USB-A, but the former is much more prevalent in 2024, meaning the older connection could be on borrowed time.
