After the full moon at the end of the year, the following lunar phases will appear during January 2024. This will be added to the most important astronomical events of the month, some of which will be observable in the skies of Peru and other countries.
Everything you need to know regarding the lunar calendar for January 2024 and other details to take into account when observing the Moon.
The next full moon or full moon will occur on Thursday, January 24 at 6:18 pm (Peruvian time). Therefore, the natural satellite will appear in all its splendor following sunset and will cross the sky from east to west throughout the night.
The lunar calendar for January 2024 is arranged as follows:
- Last quarter: January 3 from 10.30 pm
- New Moon: January 11 from 6.57 am
- Crescent: January 17 from 10.52 pm
- Full Moon: January 24 from 6.18 pm

The full moon in January is popularly known as the wolf moon, a name that has its origin in the Amerindian tribes who during this season heard the howl of this animal more frequently, possibly due to the greater predominance of silence in the midst of the cold and deep winter snows in the northern hemisphere.
Another name it receives is the ice moon due to the drop in temperature in boreal lands.
NASA explains that the phases of the Moon are due to the relative position of the Moon with respect to the Earth and the Sun. As the Moon orbits the Earth every 29.5 days, the portion illuminated by the Sun changes , and that is why we see the different phases.
In other words, the lunar phases are a consequence of the sunlight that falls on the Moon and the fraction of this illuminated face that we can see from our position on Earth during its monthly orbit.

- New Moon: It is not visible from Earth because the side that reflects the Sun’s light is opposite our planet.
- First Quarter: The right half of the Moon is illuminated and is visible following sunset.
- Full Moon: The Moon is completely illuminated and is usually very bright.
- Last Quarter: Only the left half of the Moon is illuminated and becomes less visible.
The Moon usually appears in a different color when it is near the horizon.
NASA indicates that the apparent change in color of the satellite when it is near the horizon is mainly due to a light scattering phenomenon in the Earth’s atmosphere, similar to that which causes blue skies and red sunsets. When the Moon is low on the horizon, its light passes through more of Earth’s atmosphere than when it is high in the sky. The atmosphere filters and disperses blue and green light more than red light. As a result, the Moon’s light may appear more red or orange.
This effect is even more pronounced when there are particles in the atmosphere, such as dust, pollen, or pollution, which can increase the dispersion of shorter colors and give the natural satellite an even redder tone than normal. This phenomenon is known as Rayleigh scattering.
