Today marks the 128th anniversary of the first world public screening of the film. That is the anniversary of cinema becoming a commodity. On December 28, 1895, the Lumière brothers held their first public exhibition of their picture.

Auguste Lumiere and Louis Lumiere were the sons of Claude Annerain Lumiere, who ran a photographic firm in France. Both trained at the famous technical school of Lyon, La Martiniere. Experimenting with cameras and projectors, they devised a method of showing films that might be viewed by many people at once. They called it Cinematograph. They patented their cinematograph and first used it to film workers coming out of the factory. On December 28, 1895 in Paris, the Lumière brothers held their first public exhibition of their painting. About 200 paying people went to watch the movie at Grant Cafe. 10 short films were screened that day.

They also showed the scene of the train arriving at the railway station. Seeing this, the people scattered fearing that the train was rushing towards them. One of the most amazing inventions in human history. In the early days, those who came with cinema were dismissed as madmen and witches. Eventually the Lumiere brothers made us slaves to that illusory power. Even following one hundred and twenty eight years, we live happily as slaves without longing for freedom.
