Prostheses and bad memories
By his own admission, as we learn in the audio commentary of the saga, John Rhys-Davies does not have a particularly pleasant memory of the filming of the trilogy. Obliged to wear prostheses on the face permanently, the interpreter of Gimli ended up putting a little behind the other actors:
“It disfigured me so much that I isolated myself and I became paranoid, very lonely”raconte John Rhys-Davies. “I didn’t want to go out or have dinner with other people. I wanted to be alone, I was ashamed of my face. And for me, the most fun part of acting is being with other people. .”
Lurtz’s makeup
John Rhys-Davies is not the only actor in the saga to have had to endure long makeup sessions, far from it. Indeed, we can also cite the ordeal of Lawrence Makoare, who played the monstrous leader of the Uruk-hai in The Fellowship of the Ring. In order to give her the appearance of this hideous creature, 9 hours of makeup were needed each time.
