The anti-inflammatory effect of exercise, lasting for more than a week… The full-fledged effect will be seen in 6-8 weeks

Research has shown that the effect of getting rid of inflammation in the body lasts for more than a week when you exercise.

A research team at York University in Canada announced that the results of mouse experiments showed that the effect of exercise to strengthen the immune system by removing inflammation persists even following a week. In particular, the research team found that exercise eliminates inflammation because it changes the function of macrophages in the bone marrow.

Corresponding author of the study, Associate Professor Ali Abdul Sater (kinesiology), said, “We found that, just like exercise trains muscles, moderate exercise trains bone marrow macrophage precursors to eliminate inflammation.” A precursor is a substance at a stage before it becomes a specific substance in a certain metabolic reaction.

Until now, it has been well known that moderate exercise has a good effect on the body’s response to inflammation, but the reason has not been clearly explained.

Macrophages are white blood cells that belong to the body’s immune cells and eat cancer cells and cell debris. It serves to clear the infected area and heal wounds.

Inflammation is the body’s response to infection, stressors, etc., and some degree of inflammation is necessary and desirable. However, when there is too much inflammation, various diseases occur. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune diseases are all inherently caused by inappropriate and excessive inflammation.

Associate Professor Sater said, “It was found that the immune system of the exercising mice differs markedly from that of the sedentary mice at 6 to 8 weeks of exercise.” At this time, the way cells breathe, the way cells metabolize glucose, and the way cells access DNA change dramatically. Exercise begins to take full effect.

He emphasized, “It doesn’t have the same effect for everyone, but moderate and consistent exercise goes a long way in improving metabolic health and strengthening immunity.”

The results of this study (Moderate exercise induces trained immunity in macrophages) were published in Cell Physiology, a journal of the American Physiological Society.
