Brasilia: World’s “Loneliest” Man Dies The last member of one of the tribes that has no contact with the outside world has succumbed to death in the Amazon jungle.
No one knows his name or other details who has been living alone for almost three decades. He was found dead in a goat cradle (hammock) outside his hut on the 23rd. Officials said no signs of violence were found. He is believed to be around 60 years old and died of natural causes.
He lived in Tanaru, a Brazilian state bordering Bolivia. He was wearing a maravuri and was looking at the outside with concern. He was known as ‘Man of the Hole’ because of his deep holes.
Till the 1970s, the grave man and his team fought once morest the animals. It was only following that that ‘modern’ humans came along with the invasion. One by one they killed the pit man’s tribe. The remaining six members of the tribe were shot dead in 1995. That’s when solitude begins.
Under Brazil’s constitution, indigenous peoples have rights to their traditional lands. Those who come to seize this land usually kill the tribes together. Agents of Funai (Brazil’s Indigenous Affairs Agency), the Brazilian government agency for the security of tribal groups, monitored the pit man at regular intervals.
In 2018, Funai agents managed to capture his picture by accident. In the footage, he is seen chopping at a tree with something resembling an axe. The group has not seen him since then. However, many times he had seen straw huts and deep pits built by him. From observing his surroundings, it was understood that corn, papaya, banana etc. were planted.
There are approximately 240 indigenous tribes in Brazil. Encroachment of illegal miners, loggers and farmers into their territory is a threat.
