DIn the run-up to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, Lombardy intends to do well.

At the start of 2022, Attilio Fontana summarized in a few lines the regional ambition and the desire to take advantage of the springboard offered by the Games to invest massively in key areas.

As the Regional President then explained, re-elected in February 2023 :

We do not consider the 2026 Winter Games as an event that begins and ends with the Olympic month, but as a five-year journey that has already begun, with the preparation of the territory, the establishment of the entities of governance, issues relating to the event and its impact on the regional territory of Lombardy, through infrastructure, tourism, commerce and culture.

Also, following having launched a massive plan of 575 million euros in favor of infrastructurein addition toa government contribution initially estimated at 473 million euros for Lombard transportthe Region recently approved a 2023-2025 three-year plan of more than 126 million euros for culture.

This substantial envelope will notably make it possible to promote regional sites classified as World Heritage by UNESCO and to create or rehabilitate tourist circuits.

The Three-year Plan – which is part of the dynamic of the Cultural Olympiad or Cultural Program linked to the 2026 Olympic Games – also aims to ensure active support for museums, libraries and cinemas in Lombardy, with also an investment in new technologies at the service of culture, and a section dedicated to accessibility for people with disabilities in heritage sites.

The investment must also relate to the extension of the initiative “OperaLombardia” which is characterized by cooperation between five performance halls – Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Pavia – among the most renowned in northern Italy for their rich and varied programming, with the support of the Lombardy Region and the Foundation Cariplo.

In detail, the three-year plan for culture will be financed by the Region from its own funds to the tune of 25.5 million euros, to which will be added the contribution of the Plan Lombardy Plan for 49 million euros, a contribution from the Economic Recovery Plan for 34 million, as well as an envelope of 17.6 million euros taken from the European Regional Development Fund (Por-Fesr) 2021-2027 .

The announcement of this investment comes at the same time as the signing of an agreement between the State and the Region which will allocate to Lombardy an envelope exceeding 1.2 billion euros as part of the Development and Cohesion Fund 2021-2027.

Of this total amount, nearly 72 million will be allocated to projects linked to higher education with, in the Milan sector, a contribution to new campus projects for the University (15 million), the Conservatory (26.6 million) and Polytechnique (30 million).

Still in the Milan region, the requalification of the train station Milan Cadorna will benefit from an investment of 150 million euros, the overall cost being currently estimated at 435 million euros.

Beyond Milan, the agreement signed this week will also make it possible to direct no less than 331 million euros for the purchase of new regional trains, but another 30 million towards sustainable urban development programs.
