The new live version of the Disney cartoon has been the victim of “review bombing”, a practice that consists of mass publishing negative reviews online with the aim of causing harm.

Since Disney cast Halle Bailey, a black actress, to play Ariel in a new live-action version of The little Mermaidthe young actress is the victim of racist remarks, and the project is attacked by trolls on social networks.

The release of the film on May 24 only amplified this phenomenon, which was accompanied by “review bombing”, a practice which consists in publishing negative opinions en masse online, with the aim of harming.

This phenomenon, linked to the wave of racism suffered by Halle Bailey, has forced criticism aggregating sites, such as Allocinated in France or IMDB in the United States, to place a warning, in order to justify the large number of very low ratings.

“Currently, we are observing an unusual distribution of ratings on this film which should invite caution. We encourage you to form your own opinion on this film”, indicates a text on the film page on Allociné.

“A sounding board for society”

The Disney blockbuster has a total of 303 5-star reviews, 124 4-star reviews, and 106 0-star reviews to date. Julien Marcel, managing director of Allociné and The Boxoffice Company, has therefore decided to intervene, as he explains to the Parisian:

“We don’t know what’s behind it, but this distribution is very atypical, and the same has been seen on similar sites in other countries, such as IMDb. From there, we decided to say ‘ Attention!’ to Allociné visitors.”

All racist comments have been deleted by the site’s moderators: “Allociné being the reference cinema site, it acts as a sounding board for society”, he says. “We even banned dozens of accounts.”
