The little Mermaid topped the US weekend box office and grabbed the top spot ahead of a Fast and Furious 10 out of fuel.
shy start for the little mermaid
Mickey’s firm continued to expand its catalog of great animation classics with a new Disney remake (the perfect recipe for failure), this time attacking that of The little Mermaid, released in 1990 in France. And even if for the writing, The little Mermaid is still a shameful remake, the film directed by Rob Marshall still managed to convince part of the American public during its first weekend of exploitation (not even counting the Memorial Day holiday Monday). With recipes that would be around more than 95 million dollars, The little Mermaid would make a nice start at the American box office and thus seize the first place of the classification.
The film would therefore be placed in the average of the first weekends of other remakes of the firm like The jungle Book (103.2 million) or Aladdin (91 million). Far ahead of bad students Cinderella (67 million) and above all Dumbo (45 million), the feature film would nevertheless achieve a relatively timid score when considering its budget the 200 million the dollarsand the figures achieved by the champions of the exercise. The beauty and the Beast had raised $174 million (budget of 160) and The Lion King raked in $191 million for its launch (to end its run at $1.6 billion). They therefore remain by far the most successful live-action Disney remakes.
fast & furious 10 takes a road trip
In second place on the podium, we would find Vin Diesel and his improbable family with the worst episode of the saga, Fast X. With 23 million dollarsthe film would therefore leave the top of the rankings in its second week and achieve figures well below its ambitions and its budget which would have exploded to reach the incredible sum of 340 million dollars. The film would thus record a vertiginous drop of 65.7%the level of the recent catastrophe Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. These figures would also confirm the poor handling of the saga since the immense success of Fast & Furious 7 and its opening at $147 million.
With a first weekend estimated at 67 million dollars, the feature film by Frenchman Louis Leterrier would therefore continue the trend of the franchise, of which each episode did less than the previous one (Fast & Furious 9 et Fast & Furious 8 started at $70 million and $98 million, respectively). However, even if these figures are extremely disappointing for the American market, the film would nevertheless be doing very well internationally, since it would have already passed the bar of 500 million dollars worldwide. And while many American films are finding it increasingly difficult to establish themselves in China, the franchise would still manage to attract audiences there, as evidenced by its 81 million dollars harvested.
marvel reassures, awesome mario
We can also note that the very successful Guardians of the Galaxy 3 would have nicely succeeded in repairing the affront ofAnt-Man 3. The film with Paul Rudd was a bitter failure in the United States (214 million dollars earned for a budget of 200) where Star-Lord and his team would have already collected 300 million dollars in four weeks. Finally, the phenomenon Super Mario Bros., the Movies would continue to draw crowds since with its 6.3 million dollars earned for its 8th (!) week in theaters, the film would remain in 4th place in the weekend ranking and would reach the impressive sum of 558 million dollars raised on American soil.
The Memorial Day holiday Monday in the United States would have confirmed the trend of the weekend and would have especially benefited Disney and The little Mermaid, which reportedly raised an additional $22 million. Bob Iger’s firm would thus remain the big box office winner, facing the franchise Fast & Furious which seems to be coming to an end in the United States. Next film to come to shake up the headliners: Spider-Man : Across the Spider-Verse from June 2, 2023 (and May 31 in France).
