The Listenbourg, the new European country born on Twitter which ignites social networks

When the joke works too well. A new country has appeared on the map of Europe. On Sunday, a user shared on Twitter a map showing the existence of Listenbourg, a country bordering Spain and Portugal. “I’m sure Americans don’t even know the name of this country”

This simple joke to make fun of the level of geography of Americans, reputed to be very bad, has become a real phenomenon.

In a few days, the publication made the rounds of social networks: it counts to date more than 90,000 likes and thousands of shares. Internet users have played the game, so much so that for several days we have seen posts aiming to write the history of this country. The Listenbourg therefore has a national anthem, inspired by the British God Save the King, a flag, a map, political authorities…

Several “official” Twitter accounts representing the different ministries of the Listenbourgeois government have been created. The joke’s creator was made president, and the brand new country even got its fake Wikipedia page, which has since been taken down. A moderator for the online encyclopedia said the joke should “stay on Twitter”.

TikTok has also taken hold of the hoax, where several videos retracing the history of Listenbourg are emerging. Thus the country would be populated by 59 million inhabitants, would be a member of the UN and NATO since October 31, 2022 and would have acquired its independence in 740.

Several brands and organizations have also taken advantage of the joke to promote, such as the telephone operator Free, which announced the opening of a package in this new country, Netflix, or even the Olympics. of Paris who announced the participation of the country among the delegations represented.

Finally, the Listenbourg seems to confirm the lack of geographical knowledge of the Americans. A fact already revealed several times, especially in 2017 when a video from the American channel ABCwhich asked Americans to place countries on a map, caused a stir.
