Kidney stones, also known as kidney stones, occur when minerals and salts from the body crystallize in these organs and create hard deposits, which can affect any part of the urinary tract.
This condition is more common than you think. In fact, according to the Spanish Association of Urology (AEU), one in ten people will suffer a kidney stone at some point in their lives. The incidence of this condition increases following the age of 20 and is highest between the ages of 40 and 60, especially in men.
Drinking enough fluids, especially water, is key to preventing kidney stones. Unless the person has kidney failure, the recommendation is to drink six to eight eight-ounce glasses every day, according to the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
To this is added food, since the intake of some products can affect its formation. There are drinks, in particular, that should be avoided so that these salts and minerals do not crystallize. These are some of them.
– Alcohol. In general, alcoholic beverages are not recommended for health and even more so if they are consumed in excess because they can favor the appearance of gout, says Cinfasalud. This disease, which attacks the big toe, occurs when urate crystals accumulate in a joint, causing inflammation and severe pain.
– Protein shakes: Consuming protein would favor the formation of kidney stones. According to the University of Chicago Kidney Stone Evaluation and Treatment program, protein loads increase calcium in the urine, and with it the chance of stone formation. It is advisable to consume them in moderation.
– Coffee and tea: The US National Library of Medicine recommends reducing your intake of coffee, tea, and cola drinks to one cup a day. He claims that caffeine can cause the body to lose fluid too quickly, leading to dehydration and as a consequence increasing the chances that salt and mineral compounds will harden or crystallize.
Along these lines, it is important to be clear that dehydration is one of the most important factors that contributes to the development of kidney stones, says the Medical News Today portal on medical issues.
“When the body is dehydrated, fluid moves more slowly through the kidneys, increasing the chances that salt and mineral compounds will come into direct contact and stick together,” he explains.

There are some recommendations that help prevent the appearance of stones and their annoying symptoms, according to Cinfasalud.

- Drink enough water. It is advisable to do it regularly throughout the day, especially if the person lives in a hot climate or does a lot of physical exercise.
- Consume vegetable protein. It is advisable to moderate the consumption of meats, especially the less lean ones, and increase the consumption of foods such as avocado, cauliflower and peas, rich in vegetable protein.
- Avoid salt in excess. Since kidney stones are associated with high sodium intakes, it is important to reduce salt intake.
