Silvana Estrada’s music combines poetry and folklore, a timeless mix. The 27-year-old Mexican singer-songwriter has developed a musical identity that currently positions her as one of the most prominent Latin American artists in the industry, according to the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Silvana Estrada built part of that “being” thanks to the broad musical influence she had in her native Veracruz, Mexico, where she grew up in an environment in which music and musical instruments were always present, among them, the Venezuelan cuatro. This was because her parents (a clarinetist mother and a double bassist father) made them by hand to sell them.

In an interview for The newspaperthe Mexican revealed that the Venezuelan cuatro became an element beyond a stringed musical instrument. For her, it was a key piece to develop her passion for music. Her first approach to the Venezuelan cuatro was in her adolescence, when a need to express herself beyond words arose in her. However, she recalled that the music of Simón Díaz and Soledad Bravo was present in her life since she was 5 years old.

“I was very lucky because I found the Venezuelan cuatro at a time when there was a sound in my head and no instrument was good enough. The cuatro changed my life, it opened a window to freedom. If I hadn’t known the cuatro or Venezuelan music, I wouldn’t be making songs and I wouldn’t be doing this,” said Estrada.

The singer-songwriter said that she still keeps the vinyl record Songs of Venezuela, Soledad Bravo’s music, which she listened to with her mother when she was a child. For Estrada, Bravo’s voice sounds like the ploughing of the land, like work songs. And then, thanks to her father, she discovered the music of Simón Díaz.

“Simón Díaz’s songs have something that no other artist has: you can see the countryside and nature differently through his eyes. That music attracts me like a magnet because the combination of Uncle Simon’s voice and the cuatro are from another planet,” said Estrada.

Silvana Estrada confessed that for her, music has become a channel to explore and drain her emotions and feelings, which lead her to a constant encounter with her well-being and joy.

“Music is something sacred that makes me very happy. It is a vehicle that brings me a lot of well-being, calm, peace and joy, but I see the train of virality and immediacy (in musical artists) pass in front of me and it affects me, I am currently working a lot on that anguish,” said the singer.

In his opinion, one of the greatest challenges for artists is maintaining their mental health in an industry that is becoming increasingly fast-paced and that requires “constant reinvention.”

“If the singer is looking to go viral, he will have no rest because everything moves so fast. I think I would get lost if I tried to get on the viral train, I would do it very badly because I don’t understand it, I have been listening to the same albums for 20 years,” he said.

In light of this, Silvana Estrada was grateful to have a community of listeners who stop to read the lyrics of her songs and are able to allow themselves to feel emotions and express them through her music. For her, her fans reiterate that there is still patience and calm in the world.

Latin Grammy for Best New Artist

Silvana Estrada was recognized in 2022 with the Best New Artist award at the Latin Grammy Awards. A recognition she shared with singer Ángela Álvarez.

“It’s very nice that other artists recognize your work. I’m proud of this award because you can only be Best New Artist once in your life,” Estrada said.

The Latin Grammy recognition was awarded 10 months following the singer-songwriter released her second album Marchita.
