How the crushing of the metacarpal bone is related to the heart disease is still unclear. A possible trigger for both might be a misfolding of a protein (amyloidosis). Previous studies had shown that the misfolding of the serum transport protein transthyretin (transthyretin amyloidosis, ATTR) and its deposition is a risk factor for cardiac insufficiency. About half of all amyloidosis patients have had carpal tunnel syndrome in the past. In a further analysis, the team found that amyloidosis was found in 0.06 percent of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and 0.02 percent of the control group.
