Cirrhosis is often identified as the result of excessive alcohol consumption. However, in the United States, it is developing more and more in cases of junk food.

June 8th is World Fatty Liver Disease Day. A pathology still unknown, which would affect, according to Laurent Castera, hepatologist at the Beaujon hospital, around 10 million French people. This results in “steatosis” during the ultrasound – an accumulation of fat in the liver – explains the health professional at La Croix.

The “fatty liver disease” is defined “by inflammation and the risk of developing fibrosis, even cirrhosis”, explains the scientist. Figures estimate that one million French people suffer from this advanced form of fatty liver disease, very often without knowing it, as screening for the disease is so rare.

The link between cirrhosis and diet remains largely unknown

” In the USA, junk food is becoming the leading cause of cirrhosis”, warns Laurent Castera. However, liver disease is most often associated with excessive alcohol consumption, even to alcoholism.

However, there are risk factors for developing this disease. People’s age matters, mainly affecting people over the age of forty. Diabetes type 2, as well as overweight, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels are all aggravating factors.
