Popular snacks and fast foods are often highly processed, meaning they contain added ingredients such as sugar, salt, oil, or artificial colors.
Most people know that excessive consumption of highly processed foods, such as pizza, hamburgers, cookies or salty snacks, can be bad for your health.
However, Brazilian scientists now claim that excessive consumption of highly processed foods might increase the risk of cognitive decline in the elderly. Cognitive decline includes the loss of one or more cognitive abilities, such as memory or language skills.
Researchers from the University of São Paulo studied more than 10,000 people between the ages of 35 and 74 in six Brazilian cities. Between 2008 and 2019, the team tested people’s cognitive abilities up to three times regarding every four years.
By asking participants how often they ate different types of food, the researchers found that those who ate more than 20% of their daily calories in highly processed foods had faster cognitive decline.
According to the researchers, these results are in line with public health advice that recommends consuming fewer highly processed foods because of their possible link with cognitive decline.
Gunter Kuhnle of Britain’s University of Reading, who was not involved in the research, said the study showed “interesting” results. For example, he found that people who eat more highly processed foods are likely to be wealthier and better educated.
However, Mr Kuhnle said the Brazilian study only showed a “very weak” link between eating highly processed foods and cognitive decline – and the researchers themselves called the magnitude of the effect of “weak”.
