Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known as Charcot’s disease, is a degenerative disease that affects the brain’s ability to control the body’s muscles. The occurrence of the disease will be multifactorial, indicates the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm), and subject to the influence of genetics and environment. Gasoline or kerosene, gas equipment and lawn care chemicals are the three most important risk factors for ALS found in garages, report researchers from the University of Michigan in the US. Exposure to each of these products increases the risk of ALS by approximately 15%. Other chemicals found in garages that significantly increase the risk are pesticides, paint and woodworking equipment.
