The results of a current study from China should make breakfast grumpy people sit up and take notice. In one Cohort study The researchers analyzed the health data and eating habits of 62,746 people. The observation window was 5.61 years. The researchers wanted to find out whether there was a connection between breakfast regularity and the development of gastrointestinal cancer.

The result: People who only ate breakfast on one or two days a week – i.e. skipped breakfast on the other days – had a significantly increased risk of developing cancer. They were regarding three times more likely to develop stomach cancer than people who ate breakfast every day.

People who didn’t eat breakfast at all, i.e. always skipped breakfast, had a comparatively twice as high risk of developing esophageal cancer, colon cancer or liver cancer.

How reliable are the results of the study?

What we shouldn’t lose sight of with these results: A correlation does not imply causation. Ultimately, the researchers show that there appears to be a connection between the occurrence of gastrointestinal cancer and certain breakfast preferences. But that doesn’t mean that skipping breakfast causes cancer.

The researchers’ task is now to uncover explicit mechanisms that might exist between cancer and skipping breakfast. However, as long as there is only a suspicion of an increased risk of cancer, breakfast grouches should rather bite the bullet and Eat at least a little something in the morning.
