Figure skater Yuko Kawaguchi took Russian citizenship at one time not for the sake of performing at the Olympic Games. About this she told on the podcast “Free Program” by Maxim Trankov on Channel One.

“Mom always tells me: do what makes your soul rise. Then from the change of citizenship my soul sang. That’s why I did it, and not for the sake of the Olympics, ”said Kawaguchi.

Asked if she regrets having to give up her Japanese citizenship, Kawaguchi replied, “When I changed my passport, I felt that the Japanese soul had been torn away from me. And it hurt me.”

She may regain her Japanese citizenship if she returns to live in her homeland, but so far she has no plans to do so. “I have a job here. I got a Russian passport to make life interesting. Not for the Olympics. In Russia, my life is interesting so far. In Japan, somehow everything is neat and too convenient, ”added the skater.

Kawaguchi changed her Japanese citizenship to Russian in 2008. She competed in sports pairs with Alexander Smirnov. The skaters have bronze medals at the World Championships (2009, 2010), two golds (2010, 2015), two silvers (2009, 2011) and bronze (2008) of the European Championships, three golds of the Russian Championships (2008, 2009, 2010). At the 2010 Olympics, athletes took fourth place.
