On October 8, the Orthodox world pays tribute to St. Sergius of Radonezh. In the folk calendar this day is known as Sergei Kapustnik. In the old days, at this time they fermented cabbage, baked pies, and made cabbage rolls. On this holiday, people were supposed to go to the bathhouse to “wash away” all the negative energy. And I also had to get the house in order.

Sergius of Radonezh is a Russian saint who was the creator and rector of the Sergius Lavra.

Sergius of Radonezh, who was born on May 3, 1314 and left this world on September 25, 1392, dedicated his entire life to serving Jesus Christ. All his life he took care of people whom, possessing the gift of miracles, he healed from mental and physical ailments.

Sergius of Radonezh, who went down in the history of Orthodoxy as Sergius of Radonezh, was born into a pious family of an Orthodox priest. His parents named him Bartholomew. He nurtured the dream of becoming a monk from his youth, and at the age of 23 he took monastic vows with the name Sergei.

Subsequently, he became the founder of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra – one of the most famous and revered Orthodox monasteries in Russia. During his lifetime, he managed to found several more monastic monasteries. Among them are the Annunciation Monastery on Kirzhach, Staro-Golutvin – near Kolomna, Vysotsky and Georgievsky – on the Klyazma River.

Traditions on Sergei Kapustnik October 8

On this day, cabbage is chopped and fermented. Previously, it was a job for the whole family. Children peeled carrots, old people cut them. The heads of cabbage were cleared of the “clothing” of protruding, uncurled leaves and they were chopped. Then they poured in salt, pounded with a wooden mortar and mixed the pickles. For several days the cabbage “wandered” – it was bitten.

On this day they baked cabbage pies, also cooked chicken soup, cabbage soup with fresh cabbage, and made delicious cabbage rolls.

On this holiday, people were supposed to go to the bathhouse to “wash away” all the negative energy. And I also had to get the house in order.
