A 53-year-old woman, Sapna Jain, has spent 36 years of her life deprived of sunlight, fresh air and freedom.
According to the Times of India and firstpost, her father imprisoned her inside the house, in Tandla in Firozabad, Pradesh, India, for “mental illness”, tied with chains, to prevent her from going out.
The family fed her through a “hole” in the door, and supplied her with water to bathe through the window.
After she was rescued, a family member told the media that they chained her at the age of 17 when she fell ill, to prevent her from going outside.
But following her father’s recent death, thanks to the help of former Agra president of Angola Mahor, and some neighbours, the woman who had been living in the room without sunlight and proper ventilation for 36 years was released.
“She was found in poor condition and taken to the mental health hospital, where she was wearing dirt-stained clothes,” according to a group of women from the hospital.
A member of an NGO bought her some clean clothes and made sure to shower her.
While her brother, Deepak Jin, said: “We took her to many doctors at the beginning of her illness, but when the treatment failed, we decided to keep her at home.”
He continued, “She used to hurt herself, which is why we wanted her to be chained, and we only untied her for daily activities.”
Dr Dinesh Rathore, Medical Superintendent of Agra Mental Hospital stated that she was in poor condition at the time of her transfer to the hospital.
She added: “Some medical tests are being done on her to check her health, and we hope that she will recover soon, perhaps in a few weeks or more.”
