The Liberalist party is probably shutting down

According to the new the electoral law which was adopted last year, and came into force on 1 May this year, a party must have had 5,000 votes in a general election to automatically be included on the ballot papers for the next general election.

In 2021, the Liberals received 4,520 votes, or 0.2 percent, reports Nettavisen.

The party has now called for an extraordinary national board meeting where they will discuss whether or not to close down the party. If you don’t get 5,000 votes, you have to collect signatures from 1 percent of everyone with the right to vote. That corresponds to 38,917 signatures.

Easier to list for a new party

Party leader Arnt Rune Flekstad says it will be a “miracle” to get so many signatures.

– If we have to stop 10 people for each signature, that’s 400,000 people, he says.

He points out that it will now be easier to submit a list for a newly founded party. Currently, you only need 5,000 signatures to register in the party register, and you are then free to run throughout the country if you have not run for parliamentary elections before.

Favors populists

– Small, integrated parties that are trying to build themselves up slowly and seriously are instead being given an enormous burden of collecting signatures for every margin of error below 5,000 votes. Simple, populist messages are now the only viable path, says Flekstad in a press release.

The other parties affected by the change in the electoral law are the Alliance, the People’s Party FNB (formerly Folkeksjonen no to more tolls), the Norwegian Communist Party, the Feminist Initiative, the Coastal Party, the Generation Party, the Redd Naturen Pirate Party and the list Patient Focus in Finnmark. The latter received one representative in the Storting at the last election.

The Center Party, the Pensioners’ Party and the INP all received over 5,000 votes the general election in 2021.
