The social realism, the element of anxiety, the suspense, the personal battle with the values and ideals of the protagonist who at every step sinks and is lost in the dark tunnel of the inescapable, “flooded” on the evening of Tuesday, July 2 the atrium of of the new City Hall of Patras through the big screen of the Municipal Cinema, in the context of which the award-winning film by Stefan Komandaref, “The Lessons of Blaga” was screened.
The audience filled the courtyard of the town hall and watched a film that penetratingly studies the inner processes that take place in the psyche of its heroes, which at the same time is a “bell” in terms of the moral crisis of the society that is mentioned by automatically receiving the Karlovy Vary award.
The protagonist is the seventy-year-old Blaga, the retired teacher who is in mourning due to the recent loss of her husband. Her entire existence is now focused on providing the deceased with an elaborate tomb, until a phone scam robs her of the savings earmarked for that purpose as well.
Desperate, in order to achieve her goal, she will cross to the opposite bank. She becomes a con artist herself. The film goes beyond the limits of realistic depiction and harsh social reality in Bulgaria. An insightful study of an unforgettable character – Blaga sticks in the mind, as does Eli Skorcefa’s performance – Blaga’s Lessons comments on the evil that lurks in each of us.
