The movie
Seventy-year-old Blaga, a retired teacher, is in mourning due to the recent loss of her husband. Her entire existence is now focused on providing the deceased with an elaborate tomb, until a phone scam robs her of her life savings.
Desperate, in order to achieve her goal, she will cross over to the other side: methodically, she becomes a fraud herself. More than a realistic depiction of the harsh social reality in Bulgaria, more than a perceptive study of an unforgettable character – Blaga comes to mind, as does Eli Skorcefa’s performance – Blaga’s Lessons comments on the Evil that nestles in each of us, with way that only Haneke’s or Trier’s cinema in their best moments have managed to capture..
