The León Biosanitary Research Institute begins its activity with the constitution of its Governing Council

It was created with the aim of promoting biosanitary research by combining the structures and capabilities of ULE and SACYL.

The León University Hospital Complex (CAULE) yesterday hosted the constitutive session of the Governing Council of the León Biosanitary Research Institute, IBioLEÓN, chaired by the Minister of Health, Alejandro Vazquez Ramos, accompanied by the Rector of the University of León (ULE), Nuria González Álvarez.

The purpose of this session was to put the Institute into operation by establishing its governing body and taking the first steps necessary so that, in the coming months, it can fully develop its activity, with the creation and provision of all its scientific and management structures. These steps will lead to future recognition as an Institute accredited by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities once it is evaluated by the Carlos III Health Institute.

One of the highlights was the appointment of the Institute’s Scientific Director, on an interim basis, who has been appointed to Fernando Escalante Barrigón, a haematologist at CAULE and Coordinator of its Research Unit. Also, during the meeting, the proposals for the appointment of the people who will form part of the two consultative bodies of IBioLEÓN, the internal scientific committee and the external scientific committee, were approved.

The main areas and lines of research with which IBIOLEON begins its activity are the following: oncology and hematology, immunology and pharmacology, endocrinology, nutrition, liver and gastrointestinal diseases, pathology of large systems, neurosciences and mental health, primary care, health promotion and community health and the comprehensive approach of ‘One Health’, which are complemented by two transversal areas: biotechnology, biomaterials and artificial intelligence and personalized medicine and advanced therapies.

IBioLEÓN was created with the aim of promoting excellent biomedical research in the province of León by combining the research structures and capabilities of the public healthcare system of Castilla y León and those of the University of León.
